A 56-year-old female visitor from France was rescued from the Kīpahulu area of Haleakalā National Park in East Maui on Sunday afternoon.

Fire officials say the woman was found about 1.5 miles up the Pīpīwai Trail, and was unable to walk out on her own after suffering a possible left ankle sprain.

Firefighters from Hāna carried the woman about a quarter mile to a park service road.   She was then transported by four-wheel drive to the National Park’s base yard where she was examined and treated by Hāna medics, officials said.

Units responding to the scene included rangers from the National Park Service, and the Maui Fire Department’s Engine 7, Utility 7 from Hāna, and Air 1 helicopter out of Kahului.
