The incident was reported at around 12:36 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2014, in the area just above the fourth waterfall.

Firefighters from Engine 2 in Pāʻia hiked into the area, secured the man to a stokes basket, and carried him to a clearing in the canopy where he was picked up by rescue personnel aboard the department’s Air-1 helicopter, according to department reports.

Maui Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga said the man was taken to a landing zone where he was then loaded into an ambulance for transport to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition.
