Maui Nui Botanical Gardens offers Kalo Workshop September 4-6, 2010
The Maui Nui Botanical Gardens hosts a Kalo (Taro) workshop lead by Hawaiian cultural practitioner and mahi`ai (farmer) Jerry Konanui as part of its new education program, “Ulu Ka Hoi” (to grow interest). This three day event will educate local farmers and practitioners on the varieties of kalo available, techniques to identify these varieties, proper cultivation methods, and cultural applications. Participants will also have the opportunity to learn innovative wood and stone sculpting methods using modern equipment. Space is limited and daily fees apply. th from 9-12pm – Kalo Identification and Cultivation
This workshop is an opportunity for local farmers and practitioners to learn about the many varieties of Hawaiian kalo, techniques to identify these varieties, proper cultivation methods, and cultural relevance.

September 5th from 9-2pm – Pohaku Ku‘i ‘Ai (poi pounding stone making)
Participants are required to provide their own safety equipment (eye and ear protection) as well as wear appropriate clothing and foot wear.

Sept. 6th from 9-2pm – Papa Ku‘i ‘ai (poi pounding board making)
