Volunteers from the Maui Wedding Association spent last Saturday, Jan. 24, clearing over 200 pounds of trash from Maui coastlines as part of Mālama Maui Nui’s January “Aloha ‘Āina” volunteer cleanup campaign.

Thirteen volunteers from the organization worked the beach and roadway at Keawakapu Beach in Kīhei. The large surf hitting shores pushed much of the litter into the foliage along the sand. Bags of trash were also collected from public beach parking lots.

“It is a pleasure to be a part of an association that cares about giving back to the community where we live and work,” said Tambara Garrick, president of the Maui Wedding Association. “I am grateful to Mālama Maui Nui for helping us organize this cleanup and for providing us with the gloves and bags. I know we made an impact today and in just a few hours. I hope others will be inspired to join us for future cleanups on Maui.”

Mālama Maui Nui has more volunteer cleanup campaigns scheduled for 2015 including: January’s Aloha ‘Āina; Great American Cleanup (March 1-June 30); Keep the Hawaiian Islands Beautiful Day (April 18); Litter Bugs Me (July TBA); Get the Drift and Bag It (Sept. 19-Oct. 31); Make A Difference Day (Oct. 24); and Holiday Gift to Maui Nui (Dec., TBA).

To participate or to reserve supplies for your own community cleanup, call Mālama Maui Nui at 877-2524 or email [email protected].
