Environmental Organizations Team Up for Cleanup with ‘Bigs’ and ‘Littles’
By Maui Now Staff
Mālama Maui Nui (formerly known as Community Work Day Program) and West Maui Mountains Watershed Partnership teamed up with volunteers from Big Brothers Big Sisters Hawai‘i for a cleanup project on Saturday, Jan. 17.
Volunteers from Big Brothers Big Sisters Hawai‘i included six “Bigs” and “Littles,” agency staff, and two Little Brothers on the waitlist and their mother.
The volunteers met at the Waikapū Cemetery, and removed weeds and invasive plant species, such haole koa.
“It was fun!” said Case Manager Courtney Cabebe. “Our group cleared a large portion of koa to open up the cemetery and breathe life into the scene.”
When kids take care of the land and those resting in it, they build a brighter future for the entire community. When organizations come together to facilitate laulima, they make Maui a better place to live.
