100,000 Gallons of Wastewater Overflows in Kahului

Wastewater overflow, Maui Now graphic.

An equipment malfunction resulted in a 100,000 gallon wastewater overflow in Kahului on Friday, March 13, county officials said.

Officials with the County of Maui Department of Environmental Management reported the overflow saying the malfunction occurred at the Kaʻa Pump Station.

According to department reports, Maui Electric power was lost at the pump station, and county backup pumps failed to run.

The wastewater flowed along the side of Amala Road, with a portion entering an area on Alahoa Road

The overflow did not reach any waterway and was stopped by 7:45 a.m.

Standing water was removed, the area was disinfected, and the Department of Health was notified.
