Sign Waving Demonstration Planned Ahead of Maui Hospital Meeting

Maui Now has learned that a sign waving demonstration will be held ahead of tonight’s hospital briefing on Maui.

The grass roots rally is being organized by hospital supporters as the Maui Memorial Medical Center faces a $28 million budget gap in FY 2016, and legislation that seeks the establishment of a public-private partnership was diverted from a vote and moved to conference committee last week.

The Maui Region of the Hawaiʻi Health Systems Corporation announced plans to initiate public discussion on what they are calling “imminent service and position cuts.”  Tonight’s meeting is scheduled to run from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Pu‘u Kukui Elementary School in Wailuku.

The sign waving rally ahead of the briefing is expected to start at 4 p.m. at the corner of the Honoapiʻilani Highway and Kehalani Highway.

Meantime, the House and Senate have since announced that they will begin Conference Committee meetings on HB1075 at 5 p.m. today at the Hawaiʻi State Capitol.

Supporters say that they hope to bring attention to the the pending cuts to hospital services if the legislation does not pass.
