The Hawaiʻi Health Systems Corporation Maui Region board of directors today announced the election of Avery B. Chumbley as board chairperson, effective May 7, 2015.
Chumbley served as past board chairperson for the HHSC state wide system from 2008 to 2014 and was appointed to the Maui Region board in May 2014.
He is a member of the boards of the Pacific Cancer Foundation, West Maui Mountains Watershed Partnership, and is president of the Maui Fair Alliance. He has also served on the boards of Maui Visitors Bureau, Maui United Way and Maui Economic Development Board. He is currently the president and chief operating officer of Wailuku Water Company.
Chumbley succeeds Clay Sutherland, president and attorney at R. Clay Sutherland Law Firm, as board chair. Sutherland steps down from the board after eight years as chair.
“We are extremely fortunate to have as our new board chair such an experienced and talented person,” said Clay Sutherland in a media announcement. “Avery has been a tremendously active board member. Over the past eight years his passion for securing a thriving future for Maui County through quality healthcare has been tremendous,” said Sutherland.
“With the recent passage of the law that will allow our region’s hospitals to engage in a public-private partnership, this is an exciting but still very critical time for our county,” said Chumbley in the announcement. “Clay has done a phenomenal job as chair and director for the past eight years, and we owe a lot of our accomplishments to him and other board members. I look forward to continuing his work with the Maui Region leadership and staff, fellow board members, community and our Governor, to ensure that the needs of the people of Maui County remain the priority moving forward.”
Also retiring from the board after eight years of service are Dr. Donna McCleary, Howard Nakamura, BJ Ott, and Gina Flammer. They each have served since the Maui Region board was formed in 2007. New incoming board members have not been announced yet.
“We are so incredibly grateful for the many years of service that these individuals have given to our hospitals and our community,” said Wes Lo, HHSC Maui Region CEO. “They truly care about our staff and our community and have worked hard to help navigate through some very challenging years, and were an integral part of many outstanding accomplishments. From all of us at Maui Memorial Medical Center, Kula Hospital and Lānaʻi Community Hospital, we extend a great big, aloha and mahalo.”
