The Maui Film Festival honored Laura Dern this year with the 2015 Maui Film Festival Rainmaker Award.
During an exclusive on-camera MauiNOW interview with Malika Dudley, Dern was asked what it was like to go through hurricane Iniki while filming Jurassic Park. Dern responded saying, “I was on Kauai and it was an incredible experience for all of us there. None of us will ever forget it and it’s kept me bonded to that island in a very particular way. I try to be there at least once a year because I’ve fallen so in love with Kauai and the people. I’ve become very good friends with people who went through it as well. Just making the movie there, our hearts will always be there.”
Dern comes from “hollywood royalty” as she is the daughter of actors Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd. Her first role was in 1980 for the film Foxes starring Jodie Foster. Here in Hawaii, we know her best for her role as Ellie Sattler in the Jurassic Park series.
Dern also had prominent roles in October Sky (1999), Blue Velvet (1986), Citizen Ruth (1996) and Rambling Rose (1991- for which both she and her mother, Diane Ladd, were both nominated for Oscars).
Dern recently appeared in the 2014 film Wild with Reese Witherspoon. Her current projects include John Lee Hancock’s The Founder which tells the story of McDonald’s founder Ray Kroc and the drama Mother’s Day.
