Maui Police Identify Man Killed in Shootout, Release Further Details

Maui police have since identified the individual killed in a shootout on Lower Main Street in Wailuku over the weekend as Shawn Akamine, 46, of Wailuku, Maui.

Police also confirmed that Akamine allegedly shot himself during the altercation with police officers.

The officers involved in the shootout include a five-year and a four-year veteran of the department.  Both are on paid administrative leave pending further investigation.

The case has been classified as a first degree attempted murder investigation.

According to earlier reports, an investigation revealed that the passenger (later identified as Akamine) of an SUV that was involved in a traffic stop, exited the vehicle and allegedly shot at police officers first while fleeing.  The officers, police said, returned gun fire striking the man.

It is still unclear if the self-inflicted wound or the shots discharged by officers contributed to the death.

Akamine was taken to the hospital for treatment, however, later died according to police reports.

Police say the driver of the vehicle was taken into custody for questioning and was later released pending further investigation.

No injuries were sustained by police officers or bystanders as a result of the incident.
