Victim of Fatal Haleakalā Crash Identified

The Maui County Police Department has released an update on the July 2 vehicle collision on Haleakalā Highway .6 miles north of Palena Place in Kula.

The victim has been identified as Zhongming Zhang, 75, from Chengdu Province, People’s Republic of China.

The four other occupants of the vehicle are also adult vacationers from the People’s Republic of China.

The incident occurred at 12:24 p.m., when a 2014 Nissan Maxima four-door sedan was traveling down Haleakalā Highway (Crater Road), when it failed to negotiate a left curve in the roadway.

The vehicle then drove off the paved roadway onto the right shoulder, where it collided into the embankment and a large boulder.

The three rear-seat passengers were transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center for treatment of injuries sustained in the collision.

One of the passengers was soon pronounced dead at the Maui Memorial Medical Center due to injuries sustained.

The other two passengers remain at the Maui Memorial Medical Center, where they continue to undergo treatment for their injuries.

The operator and front seat passenger of the Nissan Maxima were wearing their seatbelts.

None of the three rear seat passengers were wearing their seat belts at the time of the
collision. The vehicle airbags did deploy in the collision.

The involvement of speed, drugs, and alcohol has not been determined as the investigation is
still ongoing.
