Ask the Mayor: Why Does the Traffic Light on Waiko Road Trigger so Quickly?
Mayor Alan Arakawa answers some of the most-asked questions submitted to his office staff.
Mayor,
Q: The light on Waiko Road to enter Kuihelani Highway triggers after only sevevn seconds. If one car pulls up to the light to enter the highway, traffic in both directions—traveling at 55 mph—needs to stop so that one car can enter the highway. Most other lights to enter highways on Maui trigger after a minute or more. Why is this light triggering after just seven seconds? Mahalo for your assistance in this matter.
A: Although this intersection is controlled by the State Department of Transportation and the county cannot make any adjustments to the timer, I will have my office check to see why there might be an anomaly with the timer. To inquire directly with the state DOT, go online.
