A Maui man suffered fatal injuries in a motor scooter accident on Kahului Beach Road on Monday night.
The incident was reported at around 10:23 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 3, 2015 at the intersection of Kahului Beach Road and Kaihee Place.
Maui police have since identified the man as Marshall Carvalho, 54, of Wailuku.
According to police reports, the collision occurred as a 2013 Genuine Buddy Motor Scooter, traveling south within the outer lane of Kahului Beach Road, collided into a 2006 Cadillac CTS 4DSD, negotiating a left turn onto Kaihee Place.
Police say the 2006 Cadillac CTS, operated by a 25-year-old Kahului man, was traveling north on Kahului Beach Road prior to executing the turn onto Kaihee Place from a designated left turn lane.
Carvalho was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical, life-threatening, condition where he later succumbed to his injuries, according to police reports.
A preliminary police investigation revealed that the operator of the Cadillac CTS was wearing his seatbelt and was not injured in the crash. Police say Carvalho was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
The involvement of speed, drugs, and alcohol are still pending as the investigation is ongoing.
This was Maui County’s 15th traffic fatality for 2015, compared to 15 at the same time as last year.
