Haleakalā Backcountry Closed Sunday Due to Hurricane Ignacio

The backcountry area of Haleakalā National Park on Maui will be closed on Sunday, Aug. 30, 2015 due to potential impacts associated with Hurricane Ignacio.

The backcountry includes all trails, campgrounds and cabins in the Wilderness Crater of the park. Park staff will re-assess conditions and re-open the backcountry for hiking, camping, and cabin use once it is safe to do so.

Park officials say the rest of the park remains open, including visitor centers, rest rooms, car campgrounds and roads in the Summit District and in the Kīpahulu District. The park is also open for sunrise viewing.

All backcountry campers and cabin users have been informed about the closure.  Cabin users have also been informed on how to get refunds.

Park officials will continue to monitor the storm and assess park conditions as forecasts are monitored. Updates regarding the park’s operating status will be shared here. Visitors can also call the park main phone number (808) 572-4400 and choose option 2 for the latest closure information.
