Six Recruits to Join Maui Corrections Officer Division

Eighteen recruits graduated today from Basic Corrections Training, with six to be assigned as adult corrections officers at the Maui Community Correctional Center.

The group was sworn in after an extensive nine weeks of training that involved training in standard of conduct, professionalism and ethics, report writing, interpersonal communications, maintaining security, crisis intervention, gangs, firearms, self-defense tactics, and physical exercise.

In November, 17 recruits on Maui joined the ranks of the state Department of Public Safety during a similar graduation ceremony.  All 17 recruits from that class were assigned to the Maui Community Correctional Center in Wailuku.

The newly sworn officers will be added to the Corrections Division to work in facilities across the state. In addition to the six on Maui, five will to serve at the Oʻahu Community Correctional Center; two at the Women’s Community Correctional Center; three at the Hālawa Correctional Facility; and two at the Waiawa Correctional Facility.

“These new corrections officers spent many hours in the classroom and in field training,” said Sergeant Avery Gomes, BCT Sergeant in Charge in a department press release. “Being a correctional officer in a prison or jail is one of the toughest jobs anyone can do, but it can also be rewarding too. These individuals chose a unique career path and I know they have what it takes to be successful in a challenging environment.”
