Ask the Mayor: Can Waihe‘e Be Added to the Maui Bus Route?
Mayor Alan Arakawa answers some of the most-asked questions submitted to his office staff.
Mayor Alan Arakawa,
Q: Can you please address an issue regarding the bus operating into Waihe‘e on Kahekili Highway? Why couldn’t there be buses in the valley toward the Waihe‘e school district? Wondered why… Mahalo for your response.
A: According to our transportation director, bus service to Waihe‘e is being considered as part of our Maui Bus route expansion. This proposal is included in the department’s Short-Range Transit Plan, which is currently being updated with four meetings scheduled to gather public input on the proposed route and service changes.
It will be important for you and others to attend one of the upcoming meetings to voice your support for bus service to Waihe‘e. The meetings will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on the following dates: Monday, Nov. 9, at Kīhei Community Center; Tuesday, Nov. 10, at the West Maui Kaunoa Senior Center; Tuesday, Nov. 17, at the Mayor Hannibal Tavares (Pukalani) Community Center, Multi-Purpose Room; and Wednesday, Nov. 18, at Kahului Community Center.
