Maui firefighters were called to assist an injured hiker in the Kīpahulu area of Haleakalā National Park, in East Maui at around 3:08 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2015.

Hāna firefighters arrived at the Kīpahulu Visitor Center at about 3:40 p.m.  Fire officials say crews then hiked up the Pīpīwai Trail and found the 58-year-old woman at the top of the trail near Waimoku Falls, two miles above the Visitor Center.

Fire officials say firefighters carried the woman part of the way down, then drove her by 4-wheel-drive to Hāna Highway where she was transferred to paramedics at 5:30 p.m.

The woman was then taken by ambulance to the Maui Memorial Medical Center for further treatment.

The woman was hiking with her husband on the Pīpīwai Trail when she injured both ankles and could not walk down on her own, said Maui Fire Services Officer Edward Taomoto.

Fire officials say the couple is from Bensalem Township, Pennsylvania.
