Maui’s New Environmental Management Director Sworn-In

Maui’s new Director for the Department of Environmental Management, Stewart Stant, was officially sworn in to office today by State Circuit Court Judge Rhonda Loo.

Mayor Alan Arakawa appointed Stant to replace former department director Kyle Ginoza, who left the county earlier this month to accept an offer for employment with Hawaiʻi Gas.

Stant comes from within the department from the Wastewater Division where he worked as an electrician, supervisor and then maintenance manager for the last 25 years.

For a seven year period, Stant also worked as an electrical engineer at the Fairmont Kea Lani Resort after he got off his daytime job at the county. He also served in the US Air Force for six years.

“Stewart is all about hard work, and it pleases me to know that he will be applying that work ethic to run one of our most important departments,” said Mayor Alan Arakawa in a county issued press release. “Kyle did a fantastic job for us and we all wish him well on his latest endeavor, but I know we will be in good hands with Stewart,” said Mayor Arakawa.

“I appreciate the mayor’s faith my abilities and I know I have some big shoes to fill,” said Stant.

“Having been employed by the department for so long I know what kind of people we have working for us and they are all very dedicated public servants. I’m looking forward to working with them, the council, members of the public and my fellow directors to make sure we meet all the needs of this community,” he said.

Stant is a Pukalani resident who has two daughters, Sasha, 21, and Kamalei, 12. Today is Stant’s first official day as director as well as his birthday.
