Whale Sanctuary to Hold Advisory Council Meeting

Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary will hold a public advisory council meeting in Honolulu on Tuesday, Jan. 26, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The council will discuss and receive updates on sanctuary activities, the management plan review process and the council charter. Public comments are scheduled for 3 p.m.

The meeting will be held at the NOAA Inouye Regional Center, Ko‘olau Haka Conference Room 1564.

Transportation will be provided at the USS Arizona Memorial commercial vehicle passenger drop-off area (1 Arizona Memorial Place) between 8:30 and 8:45 a.m. and 1 and 1:15 p.m. Visitors must bring a valid picture ID.

The sanctuary advisory council is comprised of members representing Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi, Kauaʻi, Hawaiʻi, Maui and Oʻahu in addition to local user groups, Native Hawaiian cultural advisors, fishing, business, conservation, science, education and community representatives. Federal and state agency representatives also hold seats on the council.

Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary is administered by a partnership of NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries and the State of Hawai‘i through the Department of Land and Natural Resources. The sanctuary works to protect humpback whales through research, education, conservation and stewardship.
