Unscheduled Pāʻia Cane Fire Burns 1 Acre

An unscheduled cane fire near the Pāʻia Gym early Sunday morning burned just under an acre before being brought under control.

The incident was reported at 12:16 a.m. on Baldwin Avenue in a cane field mauka of the gym.

Fire officials say crews from Pāʻia arrived on scene at 12:22 a.m. to find a 50 by 50 foot area of cane on fire, with the fire moving uphill and away from area homes and the gym, which was 50 yards away.

Firefighters brought the fire under control at 12:31 a.m. and called it extinguished at 12:40 a.m., according to department reports.

The cause of the fire was undetermined and there were no injuries and no structures threatened.

The Pāʻia fire crew was assisted by Tanker 10 from Kahului.
