Passas Returns to Maui for QB “Get Better” Camp on Saturday
By Rodney S. Yap
For the fourth consecutive year, Saint Louis School quarterback coach Vince Passas will conduct a Quarterback “Get Better” Camp for high school and intermediate athletes at War Memorial Stadium on Saturday, Feb. 27.
Registration begins at 1:30 p.m. The clinic starts at 2 o’clock and runs through 4 p.m. The event is free and not exclusive to quarterbacks, wide receivers, linebackers, defensive backs and running backs are encouraged to attend.
Athletes must currently be in 7th through 11th grades. All players are asked to bring their own footballs, shoes and water.
NIKE master trainer David Kamalani will warm-up the athletes. Last year, participants used Nike Strobes to sharpen their hand and eye coordination.
Passas will be on Maui this weekend as an assistant coach with the Crusaders’ baseball team.
“My mission is to help as many of God’s young men as possible, including coaches, if they want,” said the 59-year-old Passas at last year’s event, which was moved to Baldwin High School gym due to rain.
Passas has coached more than 20 of the best prep quarterbacks to come from Hawaii, including his most prize pupil, Heisman trophy winner Marcus Mariota of Oregon.
He currently coaches Tua Tagovailoa, a left-hander, who tallied 3,200 total yards and 41 touchdowns last year as a junior. Tagovailoa is the 65th-ranked overall player in the country and holds 12 offers with USC, Texas A&M, Arizona State, Ole Miss and Louisville among them.
