Maui Population Grows by 0.8% to 164,637 in 2015

Maui’s population grew by 0.8% in one year to 164,637 people in 2015, according to new data released by the US Census Bureau.

The numbers are part of a report that pinpointed where the heaviest population growth in Hawaiʻi was concentrated last year.

The fastest-growing county in Hawaiʻi between July 1, 2014, and July 1, 2015, was Kauaʻi County, whose population rose 1.5% over the period. Kauaʻi County was followed by Hawaiʻi County at 1.2%, Maui at 0.8%, Honolulu County at 0.7% and Kalawao County had no change over this time period.

With respect to numerical growth, Honolulu County added 6,632 people over the period, more than any other county in the state. It was followed by Hawaiʻi County which grew by 2,412 people, Maui which added 1,239 people, Kauaʻi County with 1,063, and Kalawao County had no change with a population of 89.

According to the US Census Bureau, Honolulu is the most populous county in Hawaii with 998,714 residents, followed by Hawaiʻi, 196,428, Maui, 164,637 and Kauaʻi, 71,735.

The information is based on annual population estimates for each of the nation’s counties, county equivalents, metropolitan statistical areas, and micropolitan statistical areas since the 2010 Census and up to July 1, 2015.
