Strong Competition Fuels Baldwin’s Success at Victorino

Competition breeds success.

And Saturday, it was the competition that brought on the success that Baldwin High School enjoyed in both the boys and girls divisions at the finals of the Victorino Ohana Invitational.

Individual success drives team success in the sport of track and field, and Baldwin enjoyed plenty of individual highlights in the 32-event scoring meet, including top performers in the boys field events with La’akea Kahoohanohano-Davis, boys running events with Bailey Kaopuiki, and girls field events with Kaitlin Smith.

Hurdler/jumper Kahoohanohano-Davis and sprinter Kaopuiki combined for four-event wins, three new meet records and one tied meet record as Baldwin finished with 198 points. The Bears’ total was three points shy of their all-time scoring record of 201, established two years ago at the Victorino championships.

King Kekaulike was second in the boys division with 73 points, 20 coming from double-winner Dalton Aganos in the 1500 and 3000. Lahainaluna was third with 64 points, followed by fourth-place Seabury Hall’s 51.

Smith led the Lady Bears to a sweep in three events — the long and triple jumps and the 100 hurdles — outscoring runner-up Seabury Hall in her specialties 72 to 11.

The Baldwin girls finished 14 points better than Seabury Hall, 137 to 123, to grab their first team title in five seasons. King Kekaulike was third with 55 points and Maui High was fourth with 50.

In all, there were six new meet records, including two in the girls division as Smith broke her own mark of 15.36 seconds in the 100 hurdles with a winning time of 15.29 and Kihei Charter’s Maya Reynolds ran a 58.39 in the 400, breaking the previous record of 58.53 set by Seabury Hall’s Alyssa Bettendorf in 2013.

Kahoohanohano-Davis broke the boys long jump record of 22 feet, 3 inches, with a first jump of 23-8 in Friday’s trials. He did not jump in the finals and did not participate in the triple jump. On Saturday, he followed up a disqualification in the 110 high hurdles with a personal best jump of 6-7 in the high jump. He set the previous meet record of 6-6 last year.

Kaopuiki, the state defending champion in the 100 and 200, had his best night of the 2016 season, wearing four gold medals when collecting the team’s championship trophy and the meet’s top male runner award.

The senior sprinter, who has not been defeated in the 100 and 200 since his sophomore season, won the 100 in 11.00 and the 200 in 21.94. Seabury sophomore Isaiah Payne pushed Kaopuiki in both races, helping him to run under 22 seconds in the 200 for the first time since last year’s state meet.

Kaopuiki’s 21.94 broke the meet record of 22.04 set by Baldwin’s Keelan Ewaliko in 2013. His qualifying time of 10.94 in the 100 on Friday tied the meet record set by Baldwin’s Kalei Kamahele in 2008.

It was the competition that led Kamehameha Hawaii’s Tre Evans-Dumaran to return to the Yamamoto Track & Field Facility and the estimated crowd of 750 got to witness a special race in the boys 110 high hurdles.

Evans-Dumaran set the meet record of 14.70 in the event last year. Kahoohanohano-Davis did not run in the event last year, but the two did run side by side here in lanes 4 and 5, respectively, at the finals of the state championships in May.

Leading the race in lane 4, Kahoohanohano-Davis stumbled at the second to last hurdler and plowed into it feet first. His collision with the hurdle affected Evans-Dumaran, running in lane 5, and both hurdlers were disqualified as a result.

The painful memory of the ill-fated state race fueled Evan-Dumaran’s return to Maui on Saturday.

This time, however, it was the Big Island senior who led the race, and again Kahoohanohano-Davis was disqualified. Luckily, the Baldwin hurdler escaped injury after his attempt to push the last hurdle down caused the hurdle to bounce back violently and then spin through his legs and around his back.

The combination of force and speed with which Kahoohanohano-Davis was finishing the race caused the hurdle to react freakishly. In fact the legs of the hurdle appeared to wrap around Kahoohanohano-Davis’ neck near the finish line, and the two did not separate until the hurdler fell to the ground in a submissive fashion.

When the dust settled, Evans-Dumaran had broken his own record with a time of 14.45. Kahoohanohano-Davis was disqualified, but Lahainaluna’s Kamal Golaube finished second with a personal best time of 14.87.

The state record for the 110 high hurdles is 14.44, set in 1999 on Maui by former Maui High standout Dana Navarro-Arias. Last year, Lahainaluna’s Emerson Liburd successfully defended his high-hurdle title by running a wind-aided time of 14.37 — the MIL’s all-time best.

“I started hitting hurdles, I even saw chips of wood flying, and thought ‘Oh no, I’m breaking the hurdles,’ “ Kahoohanohano-Davis said. “I hit the ninth hurdle with the front of my foot and the last hurdle I just wanted to push it down. I didn’t expect to get caught inside the hurdle.”

Because he was competing in the high jump at the same time, Kahoohanohano-Davis did not get to warm up for the high hurdles — the meet’s first running event.

“It was real important to warm up but with the high jump going on I didn’t want to leave and then have to come all the way back.”

“I just came in looking for a rematch with Anthony because that was a state race last year when we both took a spill,” Evans-Dumaran said. “So I was really looking forward to racing him, but he did not get a chance to warm up because he was at the high jump, so I knew that maybe he wouldn’t be at his best.

“But it didn’t matter because I just wanted to race him and Kamal, too, he’s my good friend and I wanted to race him. The competition here is a lot better (than on the Big Island) and that’s why I came here.

“I am definitely happy with the time. I just need to go back home and work harder than ever. Continuing to work hard will keep me ready for states.”

Five minutes later, Kahoohanohano-Davis cleared 6-7 in the high jump.

“I was really upset with what happened in the highs and I just wanted to take my anger out on the high jump,” he explained.

Smith was followed by teammates Kacy-Lynn Navarro in the 100 highs and Kaeana Anguay was third.

In the triple jump, Smith led a 1-2-3 finish with Navarro in second and Sela Panuve was third. Sascia Campos-Ewaliko was second to Smith in the long jump and Navarro was third.

Turns out Baldwin’s Panuve was the biggest surprise, helping the Lady Bears with 14 points for finishing third in the triple, third in the 200 and fifth in the 100.

Other meet highlights included:

* Kihei Charter’s first-ever state champion Reynolds won the 400 in a season’s best time of 58.39, which was a new meet record. The junior also won the girls 200 in 26.81 and was named the meet’s outstanding female runner. Freshmen Alyssa Mae Antolin from Maui High, won the 100 (12.89), but did not run the 200 and 400, despite qualifying on Friday in both sprints.

* King Kekaulike’s Alexis Henderson was a double winner in the girls ring events, producing a season’s best in the discus at 109-0 and winning toss of 35-9 in the shot put.

* King Kekaulike’s Aganos won the 1500 and 3000 runs, clocking best marks this season at 4:26.15 and 10:00.44, respectively. Baldwin’s Kai Sears was runner-up in the 1500 at 4:29.65, while Aganos’ teammate Po’okela Akiona was second in the 3000 at 10:04.36.

* Baldwin’s Jarred Paranada PR’d in the boys shot put at 47-0 and remains unbeaten in the event this season.

* Lahainaluna’s Maygan and Haylee Patch continued their dominance in the girls pole vault and high jump respectively. Maygan won the vault at 9-0 and Haylee won the high jump with fewer misses at 4-8, where she was tied with three others.

* Kamehameha Maui’s Ikaika Renauld kept his unbeaten streak in the 800 in tact, but was unable to lower his season’s best of 2:05.98 with a winning time of 2:06.57. Runner-up Kolbe Fontanilla of Baldwin, however, ran almost a full second faster than his previous best time from Friday’s trials, 2:06.94 from 2:07.92.

* Seabury Hall’s Veronica Winham was rewarded with PR’s in the girls 800 and 3000 runs. The Spartan sophomore won the long race in 11:31.71 and finished second to teammate Ava Shipman in the two-lap race at 2:27.53.

* Baldwin freshman Rey Cadiz figures to dominate the hurdles at the upcoming MIL junior varsity championships. Cadiz runs faster week after week running against varsity competition and Saturday he finished third twice and PR’d in both the 110 highs (16.07) and 300 intermediates (42.32).
