Discovery Land Company, a luxury community developer, is preparing for the construction phase of its development of Makena Golf & Beach Club at Makena Beach & Golf Resort, which will close on July 1, 2016.

The 310-room, 1,800-acre Makena Beach & Golf Resort (formerly the Maui Prince Hotel) is owned by ATC Makena Holdings LLC. Plans for the site include the development of the Makena Golf & Beach Club, managed by Discovery Land Company.

Makena Golf & Beach Club will be a private beachfront community and private club.

In anticipation of the change, Discovery Land Company has been coordinating with the existing resort’s executive team to help staff prepare for the closure.

During construction, 75 former employees of the resort will be employed by Makena Golf & Beach Club to provide for operations of the Mākena golf course, restaurant, landscaping and security.

Discovery Land Company estimates 400 new construction jobs will be created during the initial phase, with many of the positions lasting throughout the duration of the project.

The developer also said hundreds of additional jobs will be created at the club and within the local community once the project is completed to provide staffing requirements at Makena Golf & Beach Club and to meet demands of increased economic activity in the area.

“We are very excited to begin the next phase of this development and for what it will mean to the local community,” said Michael S. Meldman, chairman and CEO of Discovery Land Company. “We are also conscious of the fact that Makena Golf & Beach Club is just one small part of the larger Mākena-Wailea community. Building strong relationships and good rapport with the larger community is vital to our success here and providing our residents and members with the type of authentic, distinctive lifestyle experiences they have come to expect from Discovery Land Company. We are in this for the long term, and are committed to being a good neighbor, by helping the entire community prosper.”
