Maui Small Business Week to Offer Sessions in Hāna

For the first time, Hāna, Lāna‘i and Moloka‘i will each host one or more Small Business Week events during Maui Small Business Week.

Maui SBW will run from May 9 to 13, this year, at locations across Maui County, including three free sessions in Hāna on Tuesday, May 10.

“Hāna will benefit enormously from the small business advice, as we are a town of small businesses,” said Andrew Rayner of Hāna Business Council. “We have many people eager to earn a living here while valuing their independence.”

On May 10 beginning at 2:30 p.m. in the Hāna Old School Cafeteria, the Maui SBW lineup will feature David Daly, director of the Maui Economic Opportunity Business Development Center, who will practical advice on taxes, GET, insurance, bookkeeping, financing sources, grants, employment law and more.

Daly will be joined by Hāna Business Council directors in a full afternoon workshop to help East Maui businesses succeed and grow.

Daly has over 25 years of experience with small businesses on Maui, including business ownership, business financing, business education and entrepreneurial training focusing on community economic development. He has experience in residential lending and is a FINRA-licensed financial advisor. As the director of MEO’s Business Development Center, he works with Maui’s small businesses in education, technical consulting and micro lending.

“It is important to reach out across our business community for events such as Maui Small Business Week, and we are excited to have the support of Hana Business Council as we demonstrate the integral role of the Hana business community in the larger Maui County business environment,” Daly said.

The three sessions in Hāna are:

Bookkeeping and Your Business Daly will cover basic concepts, such as the accounting cycle and journal; the “must-do’s” and “not-to-do’s-at-all,” with tips on best practices for receipts, tracking, classification, reconciliation, sales tax, petty cash and categorization.

Employment and Labor Laws for your Business Daly will brief attendees on a number of labor expenses and laws, and share some key labor portals that offer helpful information for any size business addressing labor and workplace.

Finding Money to Start or Fund Your Small Business Daly will address the issue of raising money. This money can come from many different sources when a business is starting up or growing, including from family and friends, or occasionally, a bank loan. Daly will share some “easier options” for funding small businesses, ranging from agribusiness, manufacturing, service, hospitality, entertainment, food and arts.

Maui’s Small Business Week will kick off Monday, May 9, at the Kalihi Golf Course in Wailuku with an opening ceremony featuring Kainoa Horcajo, Hawaiian cultural ambassador at the Grand Wailea and an emerging leader in the field of cultural tourism, specializing in the application of Native Hawaiian values, principles and practices to a holistic visitor experience.

As a sought-after trainer in Hawai‘i’s visitor industry, Horcajo has instructed thousands of executives and employees from the state’s largest resorts.

Local representatives of the Maui Office of Economic Development will also address the audience.

The week will continue with prominent speakers from California, O‘ahu and the Maui business community.

Topics will include: pricing strategies and the role of pricing in your marketing mix; six different kinds of crowdfunding and how each one works; honing marketing techniques, such as use of effective tag lines and a polished elevator pitch; an introduction to lean techniques for product and service businesses; and improving operations and expanding a small business through focus on your business plan.

“Maui Small Business Week is drawing on past success to bring top-notch speakers to Maui again this year for a week-long program that helps local businesses network, learn how to grow and innovate, and increase competitiveness across both the Hawai’i and global markets,” said Maui SBW Organizer Grace Fung.

Across the Aloha State, the Small Business Administration Hawai‘i District celebrates SBW with awards ceremonies on each island. Nationwide, business award ceremonies and free educational events are scheduled during the first half of May.

The office of Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa has proclaimed the week of May 9-13 as “National Small Business Week” for Maui County.

With the official support of the Maui County Office of Economic Development, Maui Business Brainstormers is leading the event again this year with an entire week devoted to educational workshops and seminars.
