Vehicle Plunges Down 100 Foot Cliff In Kaupō
A 60-year-old Wailuku man was hospitalized in serious but stable condition after he was found within his vehicle at the bottom of a 100-foot cliff in Kahikinui. The incident was reported at 11:33 a.m. on Sunday, May 15, 2016 along the Piʻilani Highway (Hwy 31) just before the Manawainui Bridge.
Maui police dispatchers received a call from a bystander who reported that they could hear a male calling for help from within a vehicle.
Witnesses tell Maui Now it is unknown how long the vehicle had been at the bottom of the gulch.
The victim was removed and airlifted from the vehicle to safety by helicopter and subsequently transported to the Maui Medical Center by Medi-Vac, according to Maui police.
Police say it is unknown whether speed, drugs or alcohol played a factor. The investigation was ongoing at last report.

VEHICLE OVER CLIFF IN KAUPO: 5/15/16, Maui Now received reports of a vehicle that went over the cliff near Mile 30-31 into the river mouth. A witness tended to the driver who was air lifted to the Maui Memorial Medical Center for further treatment. Witnesses say it is unknown how long the vehicle had been at the bottom of the gulch.
