Brush Fire Burns 1 Acre Near Molokaʻi Airport

At 2:15 p.m., on Monday, May 16, 2016, fire crews on Molokaʻi responded to a brush fire near the Hoʻolehua airport.

Hoʻolehua firefighters arrived at 2:22 p.m. and found around a half-acre of brush burning in a dry field off of Maunaloa Highway.

Employees from the airport control tower reported the fire which was about a quarter-mile to the south of the east end of the airport runway.

The fire scorched about one acre of brush and was brought under control at 2:44 p.m. and extinguished at 5:52 p.m.

Flames came to within 100 feet of a residential structure, but stopped short at a dirt road serving as a natural fire break.

The fire’s cause was undetermined. There were no injuries or damages to the home.

Two engines and a water tanker from Hoʻolehua and Kaunakakai responded to the fire.
