Deadly Motorcycle Accident Claims Life of Kula Man
A Maui man suffered fatal injuries in a deadly motorcycle accident on Saturday night.
Maui police say the single unit motor vehicle crash occurred on Lower Kula Road just north of Waimele Place in Kula at around 6:02 p.m. on Saturday, May 21, 2016 at.
A preliminary investigation revealed that an orange Enduro KTM motorcycle was traveling southbound on Lower Kula Road.
Police say the motorcyclist failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway, crossed left of center and collided into a utility pole located on the opposing shoulder of Lower Kula Road.
The motorcycle was being operated by a 48-year-old Kula resident, identified as Robert PHILLIPS Jr.
Police say PHILLIPS Jr. was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition where he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.
The motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
The involvement of speed, drugs and alcohol have yet to be determined as the investigation is ongoing.
This was Maui County’s seventh traffic fatality of 2016, compared to four at the same time last year.
