Hale Makua CEO to Retire in October

Tony Krieg, CEO of Hale Makua Health Services for the past three decades, will retire on Oct. 31, 2016.

“Tony has worked closely with the board, employees, and the community to improve capacity and coordination of care, working collaboratively to tackle challenges in the current healthcare delivery system, as well as explore strategies to strengthen the continuum of care from acute to the post-acute settings on Maui,” said Donna McCleary, MD, chair of Hale Makua Health Services’ Board of Directors and retired Kaiser Permanente physician. “This puts the organization in a good position to achieve success in today’s challenging healthcare environment.”

During his tenure, Hale Makua Kahului has grow from a 120-bed nursing home to a community that can now accommodate 254 residents, and includes Maui’s first and only Adult Day Health center licensed by the Department of Health.

The organization has remained Hawai‘i’s only Eden Alternative Registered home since 2009, and has become one of the Island’s largest employers, with over 450 healthcare providers serving Maui residents and visitors of all ages through five home- and community-based programs.

“I have had the privilege of witnessing how Hale Makua Health Services’ programs and people have delivered compassionate, personalized care to Maui’s frail elders and disabled individuals,” said Krieg. “We have an extremely dedicated and hard-working team that treats our residents, clients and their families like their own family. They have done a tremendous job in continuing to provide excellent care during a time where reimbursement does not cover the cost of providing care and services.”

The board of directors has already established an executive search committee, which has contracted Inkinen & Associates to run an executive search. The committee is in the process of reviewing candidates, and is on track to have the new CEO hired by September.
