Propane Leak Forces Evacuation of Emerald Plaza in Lahaina

Amerigas personnel has since completed offloading the contents of a leaking propane tank and will be conducting a controlled flaring of any residual propane vapors.

The area is now deemed safe and the evacuation of affected areas has been lifted.  Hazmat 10 and Engine 3 have left the scene are enroute back to their quarters.

Maui Fire Captain Rylan Yatsushiro said evacuations were precautionary, and no illnesses or injuries have been reported.

Employees at the Emerald Plaza in West Maui were evacuated following a report of a propane leak at 11:20 a.m. Friday, July 29, 2016.

Engine 3, Hazmat 10, and Battalion Chief 5 were initially dispatched to reports of a propane leak at a Lahaina business located on Ulupono Street.

Maui Fire Captain Rylan Yatsushiro said crews arrived on scene and confirmed a leak near the bottom of a 1,150 gallon propane tank.

Police assisted in evacuating the immediate affected areas.

As of 3 p.m., crews remained on scene with Amerigas personnel who continued to work towards offloading the contents of the leaking tank to a mobile propane tanker.

This process was expected to take two or more hours to complete.  Evacuations will remain in effect until the offloading is completed and the area is deemed safe.

There have been no illnesses of injuries to report at this time.
