Children Seen Playing in Area Before Lahaina Grass Fire Starts

Maui firefighters responded to a brush fire reported mauka of the Lahaina Recreation Center on Shaw Street at 5:12 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 5, 2016.

Lahaina fire crews arrived at 5:21 p.m. and found a 50 x 100 foot area of grass burning on the north side of the parking lot of Nā Hale O Waineʻe Resource Center on Ipu ʻAumakua Lane.

The fire came within 30 yards of nearby buildings, but did not cause any damage and was extinguished at 5:43 p.m.

The cause of the fire was undetermined, but witnesses reported seeing children playing in the same area just before the fire was discovered.

The Lahaina engine company and water tanker responded to fire.
