Visiting Warriors defeat Bears in Non-league Contest, 38-14

Kamehameha Schools Kapalama receiver Kia’i Ah Mook Sang caught a pair of third-quarter touchdowns to lead the Warriors to a 38-14 victory over Baldwin High School on Saturday.

The matinee, non-league game at War Memorial Stadium was the Bears’ 2016 season opener under second-year head coach Pohai Lee. The Warriors (1-1), meanwhile, earned their first win with new head coach Abu Maafala. KS-Kapalama fell to Waianae (26-21) a week ago and opens its regular-season schedule on Thursday, Sept. 1, against Punahou.

Ah Mook Sang caught touchdown passes of 45 an 13 yards, respectively, from quarterback Thomas Yam stretching their 11-point halftime lead to 31-6 midway through the third quarter.

The Warriors also had some success running the ball with Sheldon Rosa scoring on the game’s first play from 43 yards. Micah Mizo added the first of five extra-point kicks. He also nailed a 22-yard field goal with 76 seconds left in the first quarter.

Baldwin running back Bishop Wickes scored on an end around from 12 yards out with 4 minutes, 8 seconds remaining in the first half. The Bears’ Samiu Oto later capped the scoring with a 2-yard plunge and quarterback Chayce Akaka ran for a two-point conversion.

Kamehameha Kapalama’s Rosa got into the end zone again, on the first play of the fourth quarter, hauling in a 38-yard pass from Justice Young.

The Bears had 27 players not suit up because of injury or academic probation. The majority of those players are expected to see action on Saturday when Baldwin host Southern California powerhouse Edison High School at War Memorial Stadium, beginning at 6 p.m.
