Maui Tree-Planting in Honor of Senator Daniel K. Inouye

The public is invited to a tree-planting ceremony in honor of the late Senator Daniel K. Inouye.

“The late senator was Maui County’s greatest ally in Washington, D.C., and our greatest loss when he passed,” said Mayor Alan Arakawa in making the announcement. “This ceremony is just one small gesture of appreciation for the many ways he worked tirelessly for our entire community over the years.”

The ceremony will include government officials, several branches of the military, veterans and senior groups, and will be held Friday, Sept. 2 at 9 a.m. at the Central Maui Regional Sports Complex in Kahului.

The entrance to the park is located at the south end of South Kamehameha Avenue, just past Pōmaikaʻi Elementary School. Light refreshments will be served.

Similar tree-planting ceremonies honoring the late senator have been held in Kauaʻi County, the City and County of Honolulu and Hawaiʻi County. The Maui County ceremony will feature the planting of a true Kamani tree, which is symbolic of Senator Inouye’s strong and long-lasting commitment to the people of Maui County.

Senator Inouye served the people of Hawaiʻi for over 58 years in the Territorial House of Representatives, the Territorial Senate, the US House of Representatives and the US Senate.
