International Coastal Cleanup at Hanakaʻōʻō: Saturday, Sept. 10

A community cleanup will be held at Hanakaʻōʻō (Canoe Beach), as part of the International Coastal Cleanup and “Get the Drift and Bag It,” coordinated locally by Mālama Maui Nui on the morning of Saturday, Sept. 10, 2016.

The public is invited to join a team of volunteers who will be taking care of the area with native plants above the Hanakaʻōʻō cemetery, the surrounding area, and beach. The native plants were planted in 2013 as an erosion control project under the West Maui Ridge to Reef Initiative. Organizers not that debris routinely accumulates in this area from the highway above, so a cleanup around the plantings as well as the nearby beach will be conducted.

Volunteers are asked to meet at the site by the cemetery at Hanakaʻōʻō, below the highway, at 8:30 a.m. Drinks and refreshments will be provided, and cleanup supplies will be provided by Mālama Maui Nui and the West Maui Kumuwai campaign.

Volunteers should bring sun protection and a water bottle. For those wishing to collect and take home some clippings of native plants for their own gardens, they should bring an appropriate container.

Get the Drift and Bag It with Save Honolua Coalition: Saturday, Sept. 17

Maui continues its efforts as part of the ongoing “Get the Drift and Bag It,” campaign to gather and eliminate marine debris.  The next effort will take place in coordination with the Save Honolua Coalition on Saturday Sept. 17, 2016.

Participants will be cleaning marine debris from Keawalua, and there will also be a dumpster located at the Honolua baseyard,

Volunteers will meet at Honolua stream bridge (by the portable toilets) at 9 a.m.

The event will conclude by around noon.
