A wastewater overflow of approximately 4,600 gallons occurred on Friday, Oct. 14, at 3 p.m. along South Kīhei Road.

The Maui County Department of Environmental Management reports that the overflow was caused by a deteriorated section of a force main located on the mauka side of the road, just north of Kilohana Drive.

The wastewater flowed a short distance from the rupture along the shoulder of the road and into a storm drain retention basin. County officials say the overflow did not reach the ocean.

Work crews were forced to close down S. Kīhei Road temporarily while they made repairs.

After repairs were made all wastewater was removed from the roadway and retention.

The State Department of Health was also notified of the overflow.
