MNHCoC Hosts “A Hawaiian Cultural Renaissance Christmas”

“A Hawaiian Renaissance Christmas” is the theme for the Maui Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce’s December general membership dinner.

The year was 1978: Keola & Kapono Beamer topped Hawaiʻi’s music charts with Honolulu City Lights, Eddie did go, and ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi was named an official state language.

The Maui Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce will celebrate this exciting era of Hawaiian Cultural rebirth at its December General Membership Dinner at 5 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2016 at the Leis Family Class Act Restaurant at UH Maui College. The 1970s theme pays tribute to the artists and activists who led the revival of Hawaiian pride.

“Many of our members remember the Hawaiian Cultural Renaissance with fond memories,” said MHNCoC President Teri Freitas Gorman. “We encourage everyone to dress for the era and get into the spirit of the night. Our DJ Jacob De La Nux will be spinning vintage Olomana, Cecilio & Kapono, Country Comfort, Kalapana as a nostalgic soundtrack for those of us who grew up during that time.”

In lieu of a formal speaker or presentation, the December membership dinner will feature networking, member-vendors with handmade holiday offerings and lots of old-school music. A calabash will collect donations for The Mālama Honua Worldwide Voyage to honor the role of Hōkūleʻa’s 1976 voyage to Tahiti that helped launch the Hawaiian Cultural Renaissance.

Guests may select a holiday entrée of Pan Seared Chicken with a Tarragon Butter Sauce or Red Wine Braised Beef w/Onions & Mushrooms with accompanying side dishes. Cost is $45 for members or $55 for non-members and includes a complimentary champagne punch. Due to venue capacity, attendance will be limited to 70 guests so early reservations are highly recommended. RSVP deadline is Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2016.
