The Maui Police Department has opened up their community room at the Lānaʻi Police Station to any residents who want to charge their cell phones during the power outage that began on Saturday, and continues today.

The community room will remain open until 10:30 p.m. and if power is not restored overnight, will reopen to the public at 7:45 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2017.

Maui County will also post any information up in the community room for the public. Because the electricity has been out since Saturday night, residents said they are not able to check their usual sources of news for information.

The county urges Lānaʻi residents to conserve their resources while the power is out. This includes conserving fuel by not driving, conserving cell phone power by texting instead of calling and conserving food supplies by eating fresh and frozen food first before using up canned and preserved goods.

County authorities say if you suspect food has already gone bad do not taste it to find out. “Remember that when in doubt, throw it out.”

A food safety guide is included below with more details.
