Search Suspended for Utah Visitor on Maui

The Maui Fire Department, along with personnel from US Coast Guard Station Maui and Coast Guard Sector Honolulu, conducted an extensive three day search of the shoreline and ocean waters surrounding the Olivine Pools area, where a 34-year-old Utah man was swept off the rocks by a wave on Monday.

Maui Fire Services Chief Edward Taomoto said, unfortunately, searchers were not able to locate the missing man today.

“Our deepest condolences go out to the family, friends and loved ones effected,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Will Cusic, of Coast Guard Sector Honolulu. “Suspending a search is a difficult decision to make, especially when we aren’t able to bring closure to the family.”

Responders conducted a total of 17 searches covering 539 square miles since Monday afternoon.

The Maui Fire Department officially ended its search efforts as of 6 p.m. Wednesday evening and will not continue the search tomorrow.

MFD utilized a fire rescue boat, Air 1, and ground crews from MFD and Coast
Guard Station Maui in today’s shoreline search. A Coast Guard cutter and MH-65
Dolphin helicopter from Coast Guard Sector Honolulu also patrolled offshore
waters.

The Maui Fire Department extended its heartfelt condolences to the family and
friends of the victim.
