ʻŌlelo Youth Xchange Video Competition Names 14 Maui Finalists

The ʻŌlelo Youth Xchange has announced the finalists for its 14th annual statewide student video competition.

There were over 900 submissions from 89 schools across the state. Fourteen of the finalists are from Maui schools.

Judges selected finalists based on subject impact and technical production. These panels included local news media, film making professionals and subject experts.

This year there were 18 categories, seven broad categories including; animation, mini-documentary, news, public service announcement, short, Expert and Junior Expert. There were eleven sponsored categories that included clean energy future, creating peace, fight the bite, forest health Hawaiʻi, Malama Honua, start living healthy, storm water hero, taking assessments seriously, the value of water, traffic safety and vote to rise.

Students competed in three age divisions: elementary, intermediate and high school. Previous winners and students with professional experience competed in the Junior Expert (kindergarten through middle school) and Expert (high school and college) categories.

High-definition Sony digital cameras will be awarded to the winning schools in each of the divisional categories on Thursday, April 27, at the Awards Gala held at the Sheraton Waikiki.

The live cablecast of the Gala will air on April 27 starting at 10:30 a.m. on channel 55, and will be live streamed here.

ʻŌlelo Youth Xchange was developed to help give keiki a voice to tell stories in a variety of video formats about subjects that are meaningful to them.
