Nāhiku Home Destroyed by Fire, Two People Displaced
A 55-year-old man and 53-year-old woman were displaced from their Nāhiku home during a fire over the weekend.
Hāna firefighters responded to the off of Hāna Highway in the Upper Nāhiku area of East Maui. The incident was reported at 8:45 p.m. on Saturday, April 1, 2017.
Fire crews arrived at the one-story residence at 9:01 p.m. and found the 500 square foot home completely engulfed in flames. The fire was extinguished at 10:25 p.m.
The cause of the fire was undetermined. The home was not connected to the power grid and did not have an electrical power source. Damages were set at $50,000 to the structure and $10,000 to contents.
Neighboring residents called it in after seeing heavy black smoke in the area. The homeowner was not at home when the fire broke out and no injuries were reported.
Seven dogs that were outside the home, also, were not injured.
The American Red Cross is assisting the family with their immediate needs.
