$3 M in Coastal Management Funding for Hawai‘i

Hawaiʻi is set to receive more than $3.2 million in coastal management funding from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The funding was announced today by US Senator Brian Schatz who is a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee.

Senator Schatz said, “From the Paepae o He‘eia fishpond and Kāko‘o ‘Ōiwi taro lo‘i, to forecasting destructive king tides and coastal flooding, the funding from NOAA will keep homes safe, businesses profitable, and beaches beautiful.”

The funding includes $500,000 for the University of Hawaiʻi for the development of real-time forecasting tools for high surf, king tides and storm surge. There’s also $500,000 for the Nature Conservancy for the restoration of seven acres of fishpond habitat and the promotion of community resilience on Hawaiʻi Island.
