Police Take Precautions After Report of Man with Firearm in Kīhei
Maui police closed off an area around Halekūʻai Street in Kīhei on Wednesday morning, July 19, 2017 after receiving a report from an individual who was allegedly confronted by an unknown male with a firearm.
A maintenance worker in the area reported the incident to police at around 9:30 a.m.
Maui Police Lt. Gregg Okamoto tells Maui Now that the worker said he was walking along a vacant property behind the Salvation Army when he was confronted by the unknown male who allegedly pointed a handgun at him and threatened to shoot him.
The victim was able to flee the area on foot and called police.
Lt. Okamoto tells us police arrived on scene and closed off the area around Halekūʻai Street and South Kīhei Road while they searched for the suspect. Nearby businesses on Kio Loop also reported police response saying officers worked to secure their buildings during the incident.
Police were unable to locate a suspect or a handgun and the area was reopened at around 11:45 a.m.
Police say the incident occurred near a homeless camp on the vacant property.
The suspect was described as having a dark complexion with thinning/balding hair, standing about 5’10” tall and weighing 200 pounds.
The gun was described as a black semi-automatic handgun.
