The annual observance honors the nearly 3,000 individuals who died in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, and those who aided their fellow citizens including first responders who acted with heroism in an attempt to save lives.

Flags will be flown at half-staff until sunset today.

The president also proclaimed Friday, Sept. 8 through Sunday, Sept. 10, 2017 as National Days of Prayer and Remembrance in honor of those lost 16 years ago, as well as their grieving families and first responders who were called to action.
