Contribute to the Bake Sale for Japan by donating delicious baked goods on April 2nd.

The Maui County Agricultural Festival, slated for April 2nd at the Maui Tropical Plantation, will host a Bake Sale for Japan, inviting everyone to participate in this post-disaster cause.

All are invited to donate delicious baked goods, individually wrapped treats, as well as whole cakes and pies. Japanese specialties, such as mochi, are also highly encouraged. Every item should include a complete list of ingredients and vegan/gluten-free goods should be labeled. Baked items should be delivered in containers that do not need to be returned.

The Bake Sale is not about expertise, it’s about heart. You don’t have to be a professional baker to donate, but obviously the better the item, the better chances of being purchased, thus generating more funds for Japan. And for those who don’t know their way around a kitchen, non-food items, such as artwork and gift certificates are also welcome.

The funds of the bake sale will go to Peace Winds Japan, one of the largest Japanese disaster response NGOs. All of the money will go to ground relief: medical and sanitary supplies, blankets and clothing, and long-term reconstruction.

Chef Ryan Luckey and Pineapple Grill at Kapalua have already donated 100 mini pineapple-upside-down cakes for the cause. What will you contribute? Contact Shannon Wianecki at (808) 205-7273 or shannon@mauimagazine.net for more details about the Japan Bake Sale in Maui.

Maui Now covers the latest food news and events throughout the island and appreciates suggestions. Please send tips or feedback to erica@mauinow.com.
