PROTECTION OF MAUI’S MAKAPIPI STREAM:

STUDY SUGGESTED FOR STREAM FLOW

A bill has been introduced in the state House seeking a state in-stream flow study on Makapipi Stream in East Maui. The purpose is to determine if the stream is sufficiently protected in the public interest. Makapipi Stream in Nahiku is a perennial stream that passes under the Hana highway. The study is expected to determine the extent and quantity of any diversions of water and recommend measures to ensure protection. In a landmark decision made in September of 2008, the state began implementing interim instream flow standards for five east Maui waterways. Those areas include Honopou, Hanehoi, Piinaau, Waiokamilo and Wailuanui. The restoration of minimum stream flows was ordered following lengthy litigation from area taro farmers and subsistence advocates.

NORTH SHORE HERITAGE PARK ONE STEP CLOSER TO REALITY

Steps towards the creation of a North Shore Heritage Park continue at the state legislature. Lawmakers will review bills in the house (HB542) and senate (SB381) that would prioritize acquisition of a stretch of Maui’s northern shoreline for conservation. The area covers approximately 130 acres of shoreline including a parcel extending from Spreckelsville to Baldwin Beach in Paia, the 5 acre Lime Kiln site and 26 acres at Stable Road Beach.
