The Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s Schaefer Gallery is currently presenting two concurrent photography exhibitions, running through Aug. 17, 2018, featuring the work of photographers Ai Iwane and Melissa Ann Pinney.

Ai Iwane’s Island in My Mind, Fukushima explores the connection between Japanese immigrants who traveled to Hawai’i from Fukushima, Japan, at the turn of the 20th century, to the aftermath of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami there. Using a Kodak Cirkut large-format 360-degree panoramic camera, she provides historical insight into a disaster that is both far away and close to home.

Melissa Ann Pinney’s Girl Transcendent represents a long-term exploration of emerging feminine identity and the female experience, captured in the cumulative activities and rituals of everyday life. Vivid with color, gesture, and light, the images reveal the mysterious and ardent inner life of girls on their journey to womanhood.

Both artists will host talks and presentations related to their exhibits. For more information and details, visit www.mauiarts.org

This exhibit is partially funded by the Hawai’i Tourism Authority and the County of Maui – Office of Economic Development. Mahalo to the Bendon Family Foundation for support of the Gallery’s educational programs.
