Maui firefighters responded to the Makamakaʻole Gulch area on Saturday to rescue an injured hiker.

At approximately 2:45 p.m., firefighters were called to the area to assist a 39-year-old woman who suffered an injury to her ankle and was unable to hike back out to the trailhead.

Firefighters and medics hiked in to package and carry the victim back out to the trailhead located on the Kahekili Highway.

Air 1 was also called to assist, but was not used for extraction because of the heavy forest canopy within the gulch.

While medics and firefighters from Wailuku were working on bringing the hiker out to safety, an ocean rescue was reported in the area of Ukumehame. Once the situation at Makamakaʻole was secure, Rescue 10 aboard Air 1 responded directly to assist with the Ukumehame ocean rescue.
