Fireworks are likely to blame for an afternoon fire that destroyed two homes and damaged four others in Kīhei on the Fourth of July. One firefighter was injured and taken to the hospital for treatment during the incident on Kawailani Circle. Fire officials call the cause accidental, and say witnesses heard children playing with fireworks behind the homes immediately before the fire began. Total damages for all homes exceed $1 million​.

Wild winds helped to spread a f​ast-moving ​brush fire on Tuesday in Pukalani. It started around 2:30 p.m. on July 3, and as of ​seven o’clock that​ night​, ​at least 2,500 acres of fallow sugar cane and brush had burned. Most of the affected acreage is between Haleakalā Highway and Pūlehu Road, and there were no reported injuries or threats to homes. Multiple agencies and businesses pitched in with equipment and efforts to fight the blaze.

Maui lawmakers were on hand Tuesday, July 3rd as Governor David Ige signed the historical sunscreen ingredient ban into law. The measure bans the sale, offer of sale or distribution of any sunscreen containing oxybenzone in Hawaiʻi to help preserve the state’s coral reefs and marine ecosystems. It takes effect immediately, but there be a transition period through 2021 to get more reef-safe sunscreen on the market.

Maui’s finest chefs are organizing a culinary fundraiser to support Kaua‘i and Hawai‘i island neighbors, friends, family and farmers suffering from damage from the recent natural disasters on both islands.
