Maui Motorcyclist Dies in Fatal Hit-And-Run Crash
A Maui man suffered fatal injuries in a deadly motorcycle accident in Kīhei early Saturday morning, July 14, 2018.
The victim, who was operating a Harley Davidson motorcycle, has since been identified, following the notification of next of kin, as Michael Ben Wezalis, 29 of Kīhei.
The accident was reported at 1:48 a.m. at the intersection of the Piʻilani Highway and Kūlanihākoʻi Street.
Maui police say the collision occurred as a black 2018 Harley Davidson motorcycle, traveling south on Piʻilani Highway, collided into a white 2006 Acura TSX four-door sedan which failed to yield while making a left turn onto the Piʻilani Highway from Kūlanihākoʻi Street.
Police say both the operator and passenger of the Acura fled the scene on foot.
The operator of the Harley Davidson motorcycle was not wearing a helmet and sustained fatal injuries in the crash. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The involvement of speed, drugs, and alcohol are still pending as the investigation is ongoing.
This was Maui County’s sixth traffic fatality for 2018, compared to four at the same time last year.
