Maui Unemployment Rate at 2.6% in June

The unemployment rate on Maui Island was at 2.6% in June, up from the 1.9% rate in May and down from the 2.8% rate reported at the same time last year.

Molokaʻi’s rate was 7.5% in June, up from the 5.1% rate the month before, and down the 10.1% rate reported at the same time in 2017. The island of Lānaʻi reported a 2.5% unemployment rate in June 2018, up from 1.5% rate in May, and down from the 5.6% rate reported in June of 2017.

The County of Maui as a whole had a 2.7% unemployment rate (non seasonally adjusted) for June 2018, up from the 2% rate in May 2018, and down from the 3.1% rate at the same time last year.

The statewide seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for June was 2.7%, up from the 2% rate reported in May and down from the 2.9% rate reported in June of 2017.  The new data was compiled by the Hawaiʻi State Department of Labor and Industrial Relations.

In a separate measure of employment, the DLIR reoprts that there was a gain of 1,200 in the Education & Health Services sector, with most of the expansion occurring in Health Care & Social Assistance. Job losses were reported in Trade, Transportation & Utilities (-700) and Professional & Business Services (-600).  Employment remained unchanged for Construction.
